CHORUS MACHINE DEV LOG #19 - MAY 2025

BACK TO ARCHIVE

The last month and a half has been an absolute whirlwind! I moved on June 1st, which is always a beast of a task, but then Deltarune came out before my internet got set up and… well, I don’t need to tell you the rest. It’s taken me a couple weeks to settle back into a routine, but I’m happy to report that I did indeed have a very productive May!

I got a lot of cutscene & story implementation done in May, which was really exciting! But by far the biggest task I worked on was the inventory system.

I caved, and despite my constant attempts to fight scope creep, I could not resist the call of little pictures for items.

As usual, there’s always a lot more that goes into UI than I thought. Making sure the right items were displaying with the right sprite, cursor changes when hovering over/selecting items, making sure item functionality was still intact through the new layout, etc, etc. Front-end developers are gods I think! This shit is really hard!! It’s nowhere near as hard for me as it was in December 2023—I actually understand what I’m doing now—but it’s still a pretty tedious process. I really enjoy it, though. It reminds me of my days on neopets dot com coding my userlookup...

I also got a lot of lovely sound-related tasks done in May. The settings menu has a functional volume slider! This was really fun to figure out (and by really fun I mean really difficult) (and also really fun). I balanced all of the audio across the game, and I wrote a character’s introduction theme.

There were lots of other little things, of course; coding everything I’ve mentioned above, starting on some dialogue sprites, new enemies, new interactions, new visual effects. As of mid-June I’ve taken a little bit of a break to absolutely lose my freaking mind over Deltarune and plan some big summer life things—but the summer is endless and glorious and I am filled with the energy of a good story. So, I hope to see you back here in July, to witness more CHORUS MACHINE :-)
